Back in the days of AOL 2.0 and 2.5 I was a volunteer Tech Live support person (at a whopping 1200 baud). We were watched over by a paid staff person or two, and we had mucho training, tools, etc. It was work, with sometimes 8 people asking questions at once. One quickly learned how to keep order without being pushy. Volunteers can do this if the system is set up properly. One of the things that makes it easier is community. And, boy howdy, we got community.

This forum is the one you want. Cyan posts here.

Read generally any of the topics involving MORE. That's Cyan's plan they established to get servers going for us. No news on shards etc, but we'll see as the time comes.
And it WILL have user-created content.

Now, that'll probably make you wonder the inevitable WHEN and HOW MUCH.
Dunno, before the end of the year, and dunno, possibly $50/yr tenatively.

Read the MOUL forums here, and wait and see.

I'm with Eowyn.

BUT: we'd need to seperate a little. Stop me if you've heard this one
Have two servers, a free-for-all test server that has anything and everything, and the official server. If a mapper wants to make the age of inflated rubber using tricks and such to test out bouncing in a multiplayer environment, let them. Let the age be made, and put on the ffa server. Then they can use what's learned to make an age they want for the IC server. UserKI? FFA only (except what additions are copied over). Silly ages that have no bearing on story? FFA or IC or both depending.

Give us a place to do the silly things like blue skin and skydiving and making ages comprised of technicolour meat. SL? Hardly, too much work. Besides, the big draw will remain the Live server, where the story happens.. and getting your new age there will be a feather in the hat. So in turn people will experiment and learn on the FFA server, and use it to make ages for the 'real' one. And heck, sometimes it's fun to wander and see what's there and to fly around without this 'IC' hassle.

So, to sum up, age creation (and otherwise such as clothing etc) unrestricted for the one server, so long as it doesn't break anything. And people able to go on there. But guilds are involved when you want something for the Live IC server.

Second Lifeish? Well, perhaps, but we still have the IC, and moreso.. there's a reason everyone is bailing to SL. Sometimes it's nice to have something like that to visit (not live)

                                      Posted: Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:31 pm

There is no effective way to have a live event happen that EVERYONE can experience. You have to leave people who come on after the event, and leave out people who are doing other stuff during it. Why? Well, what's the alternative?

Ok, think about it. We'll just have playback, right? Some sort of recording.

That's nice, but it's not the same. You're watching the event, and you can already get chatlogs and pictures which cover that, and you're not getting the lag that you get with a big event in cavern.
Ok, so we'll repeat it, right?

Heh. Wait, so now suddenly we instanced not just ages, but events? Congratulations, MORE is a MMO! Complete with that feeling that you don';t make a difference, because it'll all happen again with another group of people! And to do that with Cyan's staff, forget that whole silly thing with live actors. Pre-record chat, and have a script play it out. Remove the interaction, have them like Yeesha wandering about and giving a speech before going poof. That'll get it to everyone!

It's impossible with Uru's core online design to get the story to everyone. All you can do are stopgaps like episodes, which remove some of the problems. And now Cyan has even less staff to do it, so expect no real earth-shattering events like the bahro war, and don't expect them to be there consistently. There's no way for them to do it.

The only way to ensure everyone gets story, is to accept that you can't get the story to everyone, but you can get a story. So that means.. multiple things going on at once. And not just Cyan. They don't have resources. That means, yes, it's up to us this time to have things going on and running. And I'm sure people have ideas. We need them when MORE comes. User made ages AND events. It's the only way we could manage after all.

And that, yes, means we HAVE to be allowed to make the story big and happen. Sure we have RAWA's guidelines, but we have to work within them and around them as we can. We need also to have guidelines on the DRC for touchable etc. As I said, Cyan can't do the stories and can't check everything, the only way to have interesting things happen spread out (and remember Cyan likely can't even manage D'mala-like that well right now) is for us to be able to do them.

And remember as well.. we get to make ages. Now WE can tie story to ages like Cyan did.

It would be awesome if you could make it a major yearly event like Mysterium!

It is already a major yearly event since 2004. And we all would really be glad, if you would like to join us next year!

What great suggestoins and discussion. I can't wait to get back in the Cavern to mingle with all of you !

Sounds like Bahro can be both singular and plural, from Tweek's excellent point, and many other great ideas abound.....

I have never been in immediate proximity with more than one bahro at a time, tho i have seen many at a distance.. I can only imagine what that might feel like. Just one has a powerful presence indeed. Great sharing going on here, thanks to all.
